Kings to release Bruzon in nat’l interest: Imrul

The Bangladesh Football Federation heaved a sigh of relief on Sunday after Bashundhara Kings agreed to release their Spanish head coach Oscar Bruzon for the upcoming three competitions of Bangladesh national team and the U-23 team.

Kings President Imrul Hassan, who is also the BFF vice-president, confirmed to the Daily Sun that they will release Bruzon for the sake of national interest.

“We will release him for the upcoming three competitions for the sake of national interest. I personally talked with the BFF president this evening. We have breaks now so he can work with the national team,” Imrul said on Sunday, who also had a meeting with Bruzon on the same day.

The BFF on Friday earlier decided to appoint Bruzon as the head coach of their national team on an interim basis to replace Jamie Day, who has been exempted temporarily from his post for the next two months.

But confusion arose as neither Bruzon nor Kings authority gave any official statement regarding his joining the national team.

National team manager Satyajit Das Rupu said that the new coach would take charge shortly after the end of the last match of the Bangladesh Premier League between Kings and Dhaka Abahani Ltd, scheduled today at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

“He (Bruzon) may have some suggestions for the coaching staff and the team. We will bring changes as per his instructions,” Rupu, also a BFF EC member, said.

BFF General Secretary Abu Nayeem Sohag said that they have full trust in Bruzon’s ability as the coach has been working here since 2018.

“He may replace assistant coach, physio and two or three players in the squad. Oscar has been working here since 2018, he knows our local players well. We have no doubts on him,” he said.

Meanwhile, the match between Kings and Abahani has become a dead rubber after the former has ensured their retaining the title with four matches to spare.

The champions have earned a total of 64 points from 23 matches so far. Sheikh Jamal DC ended runners-up with 52 points and Dhaka Abahani are in third place with 46 points. The BFF professional football league committee will hand over the winners’ trophy to Kings and other prizes after the match.
