5m more doses of Sinopharm vaccine arrive

Five million more doses of Covid-19 Sinopharm vaccine reached Dhaka from China early Saturday.

A flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the vaccine consignment landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 2:00 am.

Health ministry officials said they received the shipment and sent the vaccine to a cold storage facility.

“A Biman Bangladesh flight arrived with the vaccines early Saturday and the vaccines were then taken to Beximco’s warehouse in Tongi,” said Dr Sazzad Hossain, an airport health officer.

With the new consignment, China has supplied around 25 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine to Bangladesh as gifts, under the Covax facility and commercial purchase.

Bangladesh, China and Incepta Vaccine Ltd on August 16 signed a memorandum of understanding on the co-production of Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccine in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh currently administers vaccines developed by four companies -- AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Sinopharm.

Around 21.85 million people in the country have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Some 14.39 million people have taken both doses, the latest DGHS data show.

The health authorities have administered around 18.8 million doses of the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine to date.
