NARAIL: A joy ride turned tragic for three friends, one of them a union parishad chairman, as their car fell into a roadside ditch in Narail on Wednesday night.

The deceased were identified as Khan Russell Sweet, 51, chairman of Khasial Union in Kalia upazila of Narail, and his friend Shawkat Sardar, 55, who worked as a peon at Borodia United Degree College.

Russell recently bought the car and took his two friends, the other being a local madrasa teacher, out for a joy ride on Wednesday evening.

While returning, Russell lost control of the speeding car as he tried to maneuver it near Sibanandapur Government Primary School on Borodia-Noragati Road around 11:00pm, according to eye-witnesses.

The car veered off the road and fell into the roadside ditch. While Oliullah, the madrasa teacher, managed to come out of the car, the other two died.

Later, the locals recovered the bodies of the chairman and the college peon.

Roksana Khatun, officer-in-charge of Noragati police station, said that the bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their families.
