An expert team of Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention (BNACWC) visited the Chemical Warehouse at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Thursday.

A total of 16 officials from the Armed Forces Division (AFD), various ministries and agencies led by Commodore Jahangir Adil Samdany, Member Secretary of BNACWC, attended the event.

Over the past few decades, the industrial economy has been expanding in Bangladesh and the demand for chemicals has also increased tremendously.    To meet this increased demand, large quantities of hazardous and chemical products enter Bangladesh from different countries through land, sea and airports and are often stored in ports for various reasons.

Therefore, if these stored dangerous chemicals are not properly managed in the port, there is a risk of any serious accident. Moreover, if all these dangerous chemicals are not properly managed, it also has a harmful effect on the environment and public life.

As HSIA is the main airport of Bangladesh, a significant amount of dangerous cargo is imported and exported through this port. In this context, the team completed the inspection of HSIA to consolidate the dangerous cargo management of the airport.

Mentionable that the expert team of BNACWC has already inspected 2 seaports of Bangladesh (Chattogram and Mongla) and 1 land port (Benapole land port) and provided important recommendations for the development of chemical safety management of these ports. The team leader hoped that with the concerted efforts of all concerned, it would be possible to ensure the safety of Dangerous Cargo in Bangladesh.
