The nation will observe the historic Education Day today through various programmes chalked out by different student bodies and social and cultural organisations.
The day is observed commemorating the sacrifices of Mostafa, Babul, Wajiullah and other students who were killed in police shootout while staging a demonstration to establish the democratic rights of students, protesting against the then education commission in 1962.
Sharif Commission under Ayub Khan framed an education policy in 1962 which proposed to establish full government control instead of autonomy in universities, ban politics in colleges and universities, keep a close watch on the activities of students and teachers, and provide 15 hours of hard work for teachers.
The Ayub government accepted the recommendations of this report and started implementing it from 1962. Various student organisations formed small scale movements and called a nationwide hartal on September 17 in 1962 under the leadership of Chhatra Sangram Parishad.
Police stormed a rally removing hundreds of protesters by truck. According to the information provided by the then government alone, 59 people were arrested, 73 were injured and 3 were killed.
The student movement culminated on this day forced the then government to suspend the policy.
