Muggers stabbed a man to death for chasing them while snatching cash and valuables from some persons in Balurghat area of the capital on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain, 40, son of Abul Hasem Bepari of Chhoto Binodpur in Palong upazila of Shariatpur district.

Sub-inspector SM AbdusSobhan, in charge of Borishur River Police Outpost in Keraniganj, said a gang of snatchers were robbing some people of cash and valuables in the morning.

Hearing screams of the victims, day labourer Alamgir and some others rushed to the spot to save them.

Seeing them, the muggers quickly boarded a boat in the Buriganga River and began fleeing.

Then, Alamgir and others in another boat chased to catch the criminals, he said.

But, the muggers indiscriminately stabbed them (protectors) with knives, leaving Alamgir and one Anwar injured.

They were taken to Mitford Hospital. As the condition of Alamgir deteriorated, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries at noon.

Inspector Bacchu, in charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, said the body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
