No surprise in Tigers’ WC squad Atif Azam

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has not made any surprise selection in their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC World T20 scheduled to begin in UAE and Oman in October.

The selectors have kept their faith in the players who were recently part of their hat-trick T20I series victory squads over Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand respectively. On Thursday, they announced their World Cup squad led by Mahmudullah.

A total of eight cricketers - Mohammad Naim, Liton Das, Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mohammad Saifuddin and Shamim Hossain -- are going to a World T20 event for the first time.

Mahmudullah, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim had the experience of playing all the previous six events of the competition

while Soumya Sarkar, Taskin Ahmed, Nurul Hasan and Mustafizur Rahim were part of Bangladesh’s last World T20 campaign in India in 2016.

Experienced fast-bowler Rubel Hossain is the only notable absentee in the World Cup squad as he was demoted to the standbys along with leg-spinner Aminul Islam.

Soumya’s poor form against Australia during last month’s series didn’t have an impact on his selection as he managed to retain his spot in the absence of Tamim Iqbal, who recently withdrew himself for the showpiece event.

“It is unfortunate that we are going without a player of Tamim Iqbal’s calibre,” Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin told reporters during a press conference in Mirpur.

“We will miss him. Initially, we were confident that Tamim would be playing in the World Cup but then he suddenly withdrew his name. Those who got the opportunity, definitely have the ability to do well. We are confident about our openers Mohammad Naim, Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar.

“We considered the team’s consistent performance…We had to follow a plan in home conditions, but we will have a different mentality when we go abroad.

“Everyone is within a system, training under the team management. We are seeing the players in training, and we are confident that our specialist coaches will prepare them accordingly. I am confident they are prepared to play, and we expect pretty much the same performance,” he added.

Apart from Rubel and Aminul, Mosaddek Hossein and Taijul Islam are the other two New Zealand series players, who were left out for the World Cup squad.

Bangladesh are in Group B alongside Oman, Papua New Guinea and Scotland in the Round 1 of the ICC World T20 and they will face Scotland in their first fixture on October 17 in Muskat, Oman on the opening day of the tournament.

The Tigers will face Oman on October 19 while they will play against Papua New Guinea on October 21 at the same venue in their remaining two qualifying matches.

If Bangladesh qualify successfully for the Super 12s, they will automatically be ranked B1 and will face Afghanistan, A2 (Round 1), New Zealand, India and Pakistan in their Group 1 matches in the main event.
