Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a top leader of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from the capital's Basila area on Thursday.

The arrestee is Emdadul Haque alias Uzzal Master. Further details about him could not be known.

Acting on a tip-off, a RAB team cordoned off a building near the Basila Bridge in Mohammadpur early Thursday, said RAB Director (Legal and Media Wing) Commander Khandaker Al Moin.

Within a few hours around 8am, the elite force members arrested Emdadul from his hideout following a raid, he said, adding that he was later taken to the RAB Headquarters for interrogation.

They also recovered a gun, bullets, two knives, a locally made bullet-proof jacket, several books propagating extremism and around Tk 300,000 in cash from the scene.

Chemicals and other materials used for making detonators were also found in Emdadul's possession,

RAB said. Quoting security guard Mohiuddin of the building, Moin said two people introducing them as printing press employees rented the first floor flat on September 2 paying Tk 5,000 in advance.

According to the security guard, Emdadul introduced him as the owner of the printing press and his two associates as press workers.

However, the militant leader did not submit a copy of his national ID card while moving in as a tenant.

The RAB official said the raid was conducted based on information gleaned from four militants arrested in Mymensingh on September 4.
