Imported onion enters thru Akhaura Land Port

BRAHMANBARIA: For the first time, imported onions entered in Bangladesh through Akhaura Land Port.

Businesses and people involved with importing goods are happy as the port began import activities besides exporting.

Earlier, consignment of imported wheat entered into the country through this port.

Shaogat Trade International has imported 24,250 tonnes of onions through the C&F agent Ma-Mani Enterprise. Revenue of Tk 66,858 has been collected from imported onions. Besides, the port authorities received Tk 4,500. At the end of the formal procedure, the imported onions were released.

Port workers Morshed Mia, Russell Mia and others said they were happy with the start of imports. This has given them more opportunities to work. General Secretary of the Land Port Importers-Exporters Association Shafiqul Islam said that the vitality has returned to the port as import of various products has started. As well as the traders have become interested, the port workers are also quite happy now. Like all other ports in the country, if all kinds of goods are allowed to be imported through this port, the revenue of the government will also increase and the traders will be benefited.

Akhaura Land Port started functioning as a port in 1994, was mainly export oriented. Stone, cement, fish and other products exported through this port are supplied to seven states of India including Tripura.

Although dried fishes were once imported through the port, it has been closed for various reasons.
