BNP out to make EC formation process questionable

Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday alleged that BNP has been hatching a fresh plot to throw the formation process of Election Commission (EC) into question.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said this in a statement after BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that people will not approve of reconstituting an Election Commission subservient to the government.

The minister further said that the tenure of the incumbent election commissioners is nearing an end and a new body will conduct the next general election.

BNP participated in the last election only to make the electoral system questionable, he said.

About BNP’s demand for revival of democracy, Quader said it is very shameful as democracy is now in a good state.

The AL spokesperson said BNP is desperate to seize state power in undemocratic and unconstitutional ways.

“That’s why they want to make the democratic system questionable and Mirza Fakhrul is continuously misleading the nation through false, baseless, and fabricated statements,” he said.

Quader said that BNP has been shamelessly targeting the government and the EC in order to hide their defeat, as they have no confidence in democratic values from the very beginning.

“BNP founder Ziaur Rahman seized power illegally, unconstitutionally, and undemocratically and destroyed the election and the electoral process. Since then, every time BNP came to power, they tried to cling to power in unconstitutional ways,” he said.

He claimed that the 11th parliamentary elections held in 2018 were inclusive, as all political parties in the country including the BNP took part in it.

“Due to the corruption by top leaders and establishment of the reign of terror, BNP was repeatedly turned down by the people,” Quader said.
