A compartment of a Chattogram-bound train from Dhaka derailed in Cumilla early on Sunday disrupting the capital city’s rail communication with the port city and Sylhet for over seven hours.

The train communication on the route resumed around 9:00am on the day.

Ismail Hossain Siraji, in-charge of Cumilla Railway Police Camp, said a compartment of the Chattogram-bound train veered off the tracks at Padua Bazar level crossing area of Cumilla at around 2:30am after a collision with a vegetables-carrying pickup.

However, no causality was reported in this connection.

Confirming the matter, Liaquat Ali Majumder, senior assistant engineer (roads) of Cumilla Railway, said high officials inspected the site. Necessary steps will be taken after investigation into the incident.

The rest of the compartments were sent to Cumilla Railway Station and Laksham Junction, Liaquat added.

A number of trains were stranded at different stations following the incident.

Meanwhile, the railway authorities have formed a four-member probe body, headed by Snehashish Das Gupta, transport officer of Chittagong East Railway Division, in this regard.
