19 bodies recovered as boat capsizes in B’baria

Many still missing

At least 19 people died and many remained missing when an engine boat with 70 passengers on board capsized in Brahmanbaria on Friday afternoon.

The incident took place at Laiska Bill in Sadar upazila at around 5:45 pm.

At least 19 bodies were recovered so far. The number may increase. The boat was carrying more than 70 passengers, police said.

The number of deceased includes seven female and one child. Identities of the bodies could not be known immediately.

On information, police and fire service personnel reached the spot and started rescue operation. Police quoting a survivor said the boat left Champaknagar in Vijayanagar at 4.30 pm with around 70 passengers on board.

The boat sank when it collided with a sand-laden trawler in the river.

"I swam ashore but my son, brother-in-law and mother-in-law have gone missing,” the survivor said. Vijaynagar Police Station OC Mirza Mohammad Hasan and Sadar Model Police Station OC Mohammad Emranul Islam confirmed the incident.
