Protect Surokkha from further attacks

It is worrying to note that cyber criminals are making repeated attempts to hack Surokkha app, the national registration platform for coronavirus vaccination, with the heinous objective of grabbing information about our citizens and the progress of the vaccination drive. It could be known from a front page story of this daily yesterday that hackers from Bangladesh and some other countries simultaneously hit the system very recently. Due to the attack, the system went through the horrifying experience of unnatural traffic of more than 30 million hits within a short period of time. As a result, the portal became a bit slow, making it cumbersome for vaccine seekers to get registered. It may be mentioned that just a day before the launching of the platform in February, hackers cloned the webpage only to grab data. However, it is relieving that our cyber security system prevented the attack successfully.

Surokkha is meant for hassle free implementation of the inoculation programme. It helps authorities to ascertain the identity and ages of the vaccine seekers and specify date and place of vaccination for each. Issuance of vaccination certificate is another important aspect of the process. The cyber criminals targeted the platform as it is a store house of personal data on millions of citizens and gives a clear picture of Bangladesh’s vaccination process.

Despite having no vaccine produced locally, Bangladesh is one of the first countries to take up the inoculation programme and sign contact, first with India and then with other countries, to procure adequate number of vaccine doses. Bangladesh is making relentless efforts to procure requisite number of doses from different sources and also going to produce vaccines locally to complete the inoculation programme. So, there is every possibility that fresh attempts will be made to access data on citizens and inoculation programme. Extreme precaution should therefore be taken so that the criminals cannot disrupt the vaccination process. Given the success of the security team so far, it is hoped that criminals will no longer be able to disrupt the rest part of the inoculation process.
