One to die for smuggling heroin in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: A court here on Tuesday sentenced a bus supervisor to death on charge of smuggling heroin.

The death penalty awardee is Parvez Miah, son of Shameem Alam at Dharmapur village of Gobindaganj upazila in the district. 

Dilip Kumar Bhoumik, district and sessions judge delivered the verdict of a case filed under Narcotics Control Act. The court also fined Taka one lakh.

The Judge acquitted three other accused named Afaz Uddin, Dudu Miah and Saidul Islam as the charges brought against them could not be proved.

According to the prosecution, acting on a tip-off, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) halted a local passenger bus in Bagda Farm Bazar area under Gobindaganj upazila of the district on 1 November in 2018.

The team recovered 450 grams of heroin from the supervisor of the bus after searching him and detained him for carrying the heroin.

As per the confession of the supervisor, the team also nabbed three other persons.

Later, the elite force filed a case with Gobindaganj Thana under Narcotics Control Act-1990 and handed over the accused to police.

In course of time, the police submitted the charge sheet against the accused after conducting an investigation.

After examining the witnesses and evidence, the judge handed over the judgment on Tuesday.
