CHATTOGRAM: The caretaker of the residence of Mohammad Ali Nabab, brother of Whip and lawmaker from Chattogram-12 constituency (Patiya) Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, was arrested along with two of his associates while selling a firearm in the port city on Tuesday.
Police recovered a Light Gun and a cartridge from his possession.
Police filed a case against the trio and produced them before a court on Wednesday when it put on a two-day remand.
Describing the arrestees as arms traders, police said they used to sell firearms to different people at higher prices. Meanwhile, police did not directly admit that Kayes is the caretaker of Nabab’s residence.
But, a photo of Kayes and two other arrestees was making rounds on social media after their arrest.
Several Awami League leaders of Patiya said Kayes is the caretaker of residence of whip’s brother Nabab.
Nabab used to roam taking Kayes with him. They are from the adjoining villages in Shovandandi union.
A press release sent by Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) said Kayes is the in-charge of ‘Green Delta Prime Valley’ at Road No 5 of CDA Residential Area.
Nabab resides in a flat of Prime Valley and Kayes came close to him there. Kayes also started the arms business under the cover of the job, sources said.
Officer-in-charge Mohammad Nezam Uddin of Kotwali Police Station said Kayes was arrested while going to supply the firearm by a private car on Tuesday.
Acting on information gleaned from him, police arrested Anu and Sajib from Halishahar Muhuripara area, he said.
All the arrestees are involved in arms trade. Kayes said he collected the firearm from Anu and Sajib and was going to hand over it to one Obaidul Hasan Alvi of Boxirhat area, said the OC.
A drive was going on to nab Alvi, he said.
Asked whether Kayes is the caretaker of Nabab’s residence, OC Nezam said they will try to know about the matter during interrogation on remand.
