Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Sunday claimed that the number of dengue patients is comparatively lower in DNCC area than in other parts of city corporation.

“It is because of the awareness of its residents,” Atiqul said while addressing a mass awareness programme in the capital’s Beraid area.

Citing a report, he said, “On August 4, the total number of patients was 221 all over the country, but under DNCC it was 44. On August 5, out of 208 infected patients, only 43 patients were from DNCC. But there is no room for complacency.”

Atiqul ordered all the officials and the councillors of DNCC to stay in the field until the eradication of dengue from Dhaka.

“The dengue cases are yet to spread in Beraid area. I hope it cannot find its way into the area,”

He called upon city dwellers to keep the roofs of their buildings neat and tidy, as cleaners cannot get there to spray pesticide.

Different things such as old tyres and pots are ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, Atiqul said.

He urged coconut sellers to slice coconut shells into four so that the discarded shells cannot contain rainwater.

The DNCC mayor also asked the city residents to take part in the clean-up drive in their respective areas to get rid of the scourge of dengue fever.
