Research Evaluation And Development Initiative (READI), a non-government organisation, has stood by the workers of different sectors amid the corona pandemic, providing nutritious meal once a day.

Many workers have become vulnerable to the scarcity of their daily meal and necessaries after losing jobs during the pandemic.  As a result, nutritional aspect has gone beyond their capacity.

In a bid to contribute to reduce short term hunger and increase nutrition for creating immunity, READI has started to provide nutritious food once a day for the targeted vulnerable workers with the support of Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) under the Nutrition Security for Vulnerable Workers’ project.

READI Executive Director Nazrul Islam said they set a target to provide one nutritious meal a day for some 13,000 workers from more than 40 micro and medium level factories in RMG, agro-food, salt, hatchery and cold storage sectors in Dhaka, Gazipur, Mymensingh, Chattogram, Jashore, Satkhira and Bogra districts.

“The food package includes a boiled egg, a banana or a local fruit, a piece of cake or bread for each worker and the package is served to the workers in each factory for 50 consecutive days. The service, introduced in August last year, will continue until December 2021,” he said.

Expressing her gratitude to the NGO for the support, Ramisa Khatun, a worker of Maxime Apparel Ltd in Savar, said, “The initiative has come as a short relief to us amid the corona situation. After having an egg and a fruit we feel more comfortable and get energy in our daily work than that of previous days.”
