The number of new reported Covid-19 cases and deaths continues to rise in the country, taking the total number of people infected to 1.3 million.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said 241 patients died and 13,817 new cases have been detected in the country in the last 24 hours till 8:00 am on Wednesday.

This was the 11th day in a row that the country reported over 200 deaths from coronavirus. Before that the country has seen more than 100 deaths a day from the virus for 39 consecutive days.

A total of 235 deaths and 15,776 new cases were reported in the country in 24 hours till Tuesday morning.

With the 13,817 cases reported in the last 24 hours, the number of total infections has risen to 1,309,910 with a daily positive rate of 27.91 per cent while the overall infection rate has soared to 16.48 per cent. Besides, the death toll has jumped to 21,638 with a fatality rate of 1.65 per cent.

Health experts said people’s reluctance to comply with the government’s directives over the ongoing countrywide lockdown is one of the main reasons behind the further surge in both deaths and infections from the virus.

The delta variant of coronavirus has spread in villages across the country, which is also another reason behind the rise in new cases and deaths, they added. Already, 953 coronavirus infected patients died and 60,426 infection cases have been reported in only four days of the current month August.

A total of 3,36,226 people were infected with the virus and 6,182 corona patients died across the country in July, the deadliest month since the pandemic has begun.

The DGHS said the coronavirus situation is deteriorating in the capital as the highest corona deaths and infections were registered in the Dhaka division in the last 24 hours.

Among the 241 deceased, 125 were men and 116 were women. Of them, five were 21-30 years old, 22 between 31-40, 25 between 41-50, 55 between 51-60, 82 between 61-70, 35 within 71-80, 12 were between 81-90, three between 91-100 years and two were over 100 years old.

Of the 241 new deaths, 93 were reported in the Dhaka division while 68 in Chattogram, 12 in Rajshahi, 36 in Khulna, seven in Mymensingh, 15 in Rangpur, five in Sylhet and five in the Barishal division.

Of the 13,817 new cases, 5,714 were logged in the Dhaka division while 532 in Mymensingh, 4,096 in Chattogram, 685 in Rajshahi, 557 in Rangpur, 745 in Khulna, 773 in Barishal and 715 in Sylhet division.

Around 16,112 corona patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries to 1,141,157. The recovery rate has stood at 87.12 per cent.

A total of 49,514 samples, out of 51,902 collected, were tested at 705 labs in the country during the period. With this, 7,948,683 samples have so far been tested across the country.

Locals and hospital sources said the coronavirus situation continued to worsen in several districts across the country, including Dhaka city.

The occupancy of general and ICU beds in Covid-19 units and hospitals across the country has also been increasing day by day while several hospitals are now overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.

Meanwhile, speaking at the health bulletin of the DGHS, its spokesperson Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam said the coronavirus infection in the country is on the rise.

He said the coronavirus infection rate was earlier around 30 per cent, which declined to 29 per cent over the last two days but it is not satisfactory.

“The highest number of Covid-19 cases was reported in Dhaka, followed by Chattogram and the lowest 19,807 cases were reported in Rajshahi division,” Nazmul added.
