An accused in a drug related case died in custody of Uttara East Police Station the capital early on Tuesday.

Deceased Liton Mia, 45, hailed from Kahaloo upazila in Bogura was on a two-day remand in the custody.

Police, however, refuted the allegation and said Liton hanged himself inside the lockup.

The family members of the victim could not be reached for comment.

Tapos Kumar Das, additional commissioner of Uttara Crime Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said that the accused was a drug addict. “He killed himself by hanging from the grills of a ventilator of the custody lockup.”

A three-member investigation committee headed by an ADC was formed to look into the matter, he added.

“The lockup has a CCTV camera and CCTV footage will be good evidence,” he said.

The body was sent to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi of Gazipur for autopsy, the officer said.

Liton hailed from Kahaloo upazila in Bogura.
