Though the country today entered the 13th day of a two-week countrywide strict lockdown aimed at curbing the surge in coronavirus transmission, both deaths and infections from the virus continued to rise with hospitals overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said 235 Covid-19 patients died and 15,776 infections were detected in the last 24 hours till 8am on Tuesday.

Earlier, 246 virus fatalities and 15,989 cases were detected in the country in a 24-hour period till Monday.

Highest 16,230 cases were reported on July 28 and record 258 deaths on July 27.

Amid the grim picture, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Tuesday said 90 percent of general beds and 95 percent of ICU beds at Covid-dedicated hospitals have been occupied in the country while Covid-19 patients have been admitted to many hospitals beyond their capacity.   “We’ve taken another decision that every Covid-19 patient needs not to be hospitalised. We’ve planned to hire hotels for the patients with mild symptoms. In hotels, there’ll be doctors, nurses and medicines and we’ll also provide oxygen there,” he said.

With the fresh 15,776 cases, the number of total infections has risen to 1,296,093 with a daily positivity rate of 28.54 percent while the overall infection rate has risen to 16.41 percent.

A total of 3,36,226 people were infected with the virus and 6,182 corona patients died across the country in July month which is the highest compared to any same period during the pandemic.
