The hotel and restaurants owners want to reopen their business following all health guidelines after August 5.

They also want to ensure social distancing within the restaurants.

The leaders of Bangladesh Restaurant Owners Association (BROA) made the call at a press conference at Dhaka Reporter’s Unity conference room.

Imran Hasan, secretary general of the association, said the restaurant sector had suffered the most from the pandemic.

“So far, due to the coronavirus, the business has been restricted to half-seat occupation and sometimes only through online or takeaway services as per the government guidelines. But it is not possible to run the business with only takeaway services,” he said.

According to the association, 3 million employees and about 20 million people are directly and indirectly involved in 60,000 restaurants across the country. “They are now living an inhuman life,” he said.

The owners said that 80 percent of the restaurants across the country are now closed due to the pandemic.

“We incurred a loss of around Tk 80,000 crore to Tk 90,000 crore since the first wave of the pandemic. Many of us are selling their assets while some are selling their hotels and restaurants as they cannot bear the loss anymore” Imran Hasan said.

“We urge the government to let us open the hotels and restaurants,” he said. “If it is not possible to allow us to run our hotels and restaurants in full swing because the pandemic, then give us the permission to run maintaining social distancing like filling half of the seats,” Imran said.
