‘Helena realised huge money thru friendship with important persons’

Suspended Awami League leader Helena Jahangir has blackmailed many important persons through friendship and realised huge amounts of money from them.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director (Legal and Media Wing) of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), disclosed the information while briefing reporters at RAB headquarters in the capital on Saturday.

“Helena got constantly acquainted with many persons. If needed, she fell anybody in her trap for her own interests. She took selfies with important people and circulated those on social media for her own purposes,” he said.

“She used to make negative comments on important persons of the state to leave them (persons) in an embarrassing condition. An embarrassing situation was too created among general people for the controversial comments,” the director said.

Jahangir Alam, husband of Helena, was a garment staff in 1990. Later, he began partnership business. Now, he is an owner of five business farms, said the officer. “We have come to know that Helena took different amounts of money from many people in the name of giving jobs at her internet protocol (IP) television, Joyjatra TV, and giving agencies of the channel. She took from 10,000 to 1,00,000 from each,” he said.

Helena could not give good answers to questions why she took the money, he said.

Many correspondents of the Joy Jatra TV were already engaged in extortion, using the ID cards of the channel, said Al Moin.

During primarily interrogation, Helena gave information that she had 15 to 16 flats with six to eight cars and she was involved in quite a few foundations for which she brought huge money from Bangladeshi expatriates.

She wanted to be a familiar face among the countrymen through her online and offline activities.

An RAB team arrested Helena after raiding her residence at Gulshan-2 in the capital on Thursday midnight.

The elite force seized foreign liquor, walkie-talkie, foreign currencies, casino items and deer hide from her house.

Earlier in that day, two cases were filed against Helena with Gulshan Police Station in the capital.

After her arrest, she was put on three days’ remand on Friday after the businesswoman was produced before a Dhaka court.

On Friday night, another case was filed against Helena under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Act.

A sub-inspector of the RAB-4 lodged the case with Pallabi Police Station for running Joy Jatra TV without any licence.
