Bangladesh has smashed the record for most deaths from coronavirus in a single day within a span of only 24 hours as the virus situation is getting worse day by day.

During the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning, the country registered 258 virus fatalities, highest since the pandemic, to take the national death toll to 19,779 with a case fatality rate of 1.66 percent.

However, both infections and positivity rate declined during the period with 14,925 cases reported with an infection rate of 28.44 percent. The total number of cases has risen to 1,194,752 with an overall infection rate of 15.81 percent.

Previous highest 247 deaths and record 15,192 infections were reported on July 26.

The country has seen more than 100 single-day deaths from the virus for 31 consecutive days.

A total of 5,273 people died and 282,494 were infected with the virus across the country in 27 days of July which is the highest compared to any same period during the pandemic.

Health experts said people’s reluctance to comply with the government’s directives over the ongoing countrywide lockdown is one of the main reasons behind further surge in both deaths and infections from the virus.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said coronavirus situation is deteriorating in the capital as the highest corona deaths and infections were registered in Dhaka division in the last 24 hours. Among the 258 deceased, 138 were men and 120 were women. Of them, two were within 11-20 years old, eight between 21-30, 16 between 31-40, 31 between 41-50, 54 between 51-60, 78 between 61-70, 50 within 71-80, 17 were between 81-90 and two between 91-100 years.

In line with the national record in deaths, the Dhaka division also saw an alarming surge in deaths reporting highest 84 casualties during the last 24 hours. Single-day deaths also grew up in Chattogram with 61 fatalities.

Of the total 258 deaths, 84 were reported in Dhaka division while 61 in Chattogram, 21 in Rajshahi, 50 in Khulna, 11 in Mymensingh, 11 in Rangpur, seven in Sylhet and 13 in Barishal division.

Of the 14,925 new cases, 6,188 were logged in Dhaka division while 567 in Mymensingh, 3,487 in Chattogram, 881 in Rajshahi, 837 in Rangpur, 1,435 in Khulna, 822 in Barishal and 708 in Sylhet division.

Around 12,439 corona patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries to 1,022,414. The recovery rate has declined to 85.58 percent.

A total of 52,478 samples, out of 55,159 collected, were tested at 639 labs in the country during the period. With this, 7,558,711 samples have so far been tested across the country.

Locals and hospital sources said the coronavirus situation continued to worsen in several districts across the country, including Dhaka city, as a large number of patients are not taking test even though they have symptoms.

The occupancy of general and ICU beds in Covid-19 units and hospitals across the country has also been increasing day by day while a number of hospitals are now overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.
