Helena Jahangir has been relieved of her member post of the Awami League women affairs subcommittee for breaching the party discipline.

To this effect, a press release signed by Awami League women affairs secretary Meher Afroze Chumki was issued on Sunday.

Helena, also chairperson of Joyjatra Foundation, has got involved with ‘Bangladesh Awami Chakrijibi League’, an unauthorised political organisation.

She has recently come to the fore after her recent activities spread on social media breached the organizational policies, the release reads. “We’ve relieved her (Helena) of her post because she breached the party discipline,” Chumki said.

Helena was included in the committee because she is an adviser to the AL Cumilla district unit. Besides this, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque had recommended inducting her into the committee.

Helena said she did not get any letter from the subcommittee and no one told her about her removal from the committee either. ‘Chakrijibi League’ claimed it has been trying to get the Awami League’s authorisation as an affiliated organisation for two to three years.

AL leaders said they have no connection with the organisation. Cumilla AL leaders said Helena was relieved of the party’s district advisory committee last month.

Helena’s old photos with incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and late Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad surfaced on social media again.Helena also identifies herself as president of the IP TV Owners’ Association of Bangladesh.
