Man tries to commit suicide after ‘killing’ wife, daughter in Kamrangirchar

A man attempted to kill himself by taking poison after ‘murdering’ his wife and his younger daughter in the capital’s Kamrangirchar area early on Saturday.

The victims have been identified as Fulbasi Das, 34, and her 11-year-old daughter Sumi Das. The husband, Mukunda Chandra Das, who pulls pushcart, is undergoing treatment in hospital.

Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kamrangirchar Police Station, told the Daily Sun that Mukunda, who hails from Cumilla, had been living with his family members in the area for the last 10 years.

The statement by his elder daughter Jhuma Das leads them to believe that he suffocated his wife and the child, he said.

The police official said when Jhuma Das woke up, she saw her father putting his hands over the mouth and nose of Sumi.

“When Jhuma asked why he was doing so, he told her that Sumi was vomiting,” he said.

The officer said that Mukunda attempted to commit suicide by taking insecticides. “He is out of danger now, but he didn’t regain consciousness. Once he recovers, he will be interrogated,” the OC said, adding that police will then be able to know everything.
