At least seven people were killed in two separate road accidents on Khulna-Mawa Highway in Bagerhat on Friday.

In Boiltoli area of the district’s Fakirhat upazila, a pickup collided head-on with a battery-operated rickshaw, locally known as easy bike, early in the morning leaving six occupants of the rickshaw dead on the spot, according to police.

Another fatally injured passenger was rushed to a nearby hospital by police and firefighters.

Five of the deceased identified so far are: Utpal Raha, 42, and Nayan Dutta, 26, of Nalda village, Abdul Hai, 50, of Shatshi village, Goutam Dey, 50, of Town Naoapara area, and Sheikh Nazrul, 55, of Dakkhin Khanpur village of Sadar upazila. Police are trying to find out the identity of others.

Officer-in-charge of Fakirhat Police Station ASM Khairul Anam said that all the victims were the passengers of the easy bike.

“The fatally injured passenger was first taken to Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Khulna Medical College and Hospital after his condition deteriorated.

“Both the easy bike and the pickup were seized and we also detained Osman Goni, the driver of the pickup,” the OC said.

Bagerhat Superintendent of Police (SP) KM Ariful Haque and Fakirhat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sanjida Begum visited the spot.

Sanjida said the district administration would pay Tk 20,000 to each victim family for the burial of the dead.

On the other hand, police recovered the body of sixty-year-old man in Chader Hat area of Mollahat upazila Friday morning. Police suspected that he was killed in a hit-and-run crash.
