A total of 2,45,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine are scheduled to arrive in Dhaka from Tokyo on Saturday.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque will receive the vaccine doses in Dhaka at 3:15pm. The vaccines will come from Japan under COVAX facility.
Japan will send over 2.9 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Bangladesh in phases as Japan says it will stand by Bangladesh in the fight against Covid-19.
Earlier, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi made an announcement that 15 countries in the region will be provided with 11 million doses in total under the COVAX facility.
Bangladesh needs around 20 lakh doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to give second doses to the people who have already taken the first dose of the same vaccine and have been waiting for the second dose.
Meanwhile, Bangladeshi expatriates have applied to the Australia Parliament to send a gift of 50 million AstraZeneca vaccines to the country, media reports said.
By approving their application, the parliamentary authorities have advised the expatriates to take further action as per rules. In this context, collection of signatures is now going on through e-petition, the reports added.
