Holy Eid-ul-Azha has come back again in our life amid the dreadful Covid-19 pandemic which has overshadowed the joy of the Muslim festival to a great extent. The pandemic has so far taken the lives of about 18 thousand people countrywide, while the number of infected people is more than a million that we came to learn from the latest updated report of the health authorities.  We are lucky enough as Allah in His infinite mercy has given many of us a new lease of life by recovering from the attack of the fatal virus. We whole-heartedly pray for salvation of the departed souls of lots of our friends, relatives and well-wishers, whom we lost forever.

Eid has arrived at a time when the Indian Delta variant of coronavirus is spreading fast all over the country which is a matter of grave concern. As per health experts, the rate of transmission is comparatively high in Dhaka division. Despite this harsh reality, people in droves left the capital to celebrate Eid with their dear and near ones in village homes. During their home-bound journey, they cared little to follow the health guidelines. So, it is feared that the infection rate might increase all over the country through the asymptomatic coronavirus carriers.

An alarm bell rings. A little slackness in abiding by the hygiene protocols will bring a disastrous situation. During the Eid prayers, everyone must maintain physical distancing, wear a mask and avoid embracing or handshaking. The governing bodies at every mosque must pay special attention in this regard. Instructions regarding the hygienic issues should be announced through the microphones of the mosques.

We shall definitely celebrate Eid with our families, friends and relatives as it is a joyous occasion for all, but there should be no compromise on health issues. Finally, about the wastes of the sacrificial animals, those should be cleaned instantly and later bleaching powder should be spread all over the vicinity so that no foul odour comes out from there to vitiate the entire atmosphere. We should never forget that cleanliness is next to godliness. It has proved to be most effective in keeping the virus at bay. Happy Eid Mubarak to all!
