The government has taken many initiatives including setting up three vapour heat treatment plants, issuing phytosanitary certificates and increasing agricultural practices to keep mangoes safe from production to shipment to boost mango export in the country, Agriculture Ministry Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said.
He came up with this observation while speaking at a stakeholders meeting with some of the representatives of the exporting firms of fresh mango and mango drinks on Sunday.
Bangladesh now ranks seventh among the world's top mango producing countries as cultivation increases rapidly each year, he added.
Country only can exported 791 tonnes of mangoes in 2020-21 financial year which was 279 tonnes lower compared to the previous fiscal year, the minister said.
The minister and the ministry secretary both said, “We would soon roll out GAP at all stages of farm production so that mangoes produced, processed and packaged maintaining all sanitary, phytosanitary and quarantine protocols.”
The ministry officials said that each year Japan source over 7,000 tonnes of mango – some of it from South Asian countries but not from Bangladesh.
They said, “The Japanese envoy in Dhaka has recently expressed his keen interest in good mango varieties of Bangladesh.”
In air cargos, readymade garments get the priority while perishable product exporters have to count loss owing to incidents of consignment offloading, he added.
