Bangladesh Publishers and Booksellers Association has urged the government to give Tk 1,000 crore incentive to the book business sector, which has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

They also demanded donation of Tk 100 crore to the families of 26,000 booksellers and Tk 500 crore special allocations for enriching the libraries of various schools and colleges across the country.

The leaders of the association came up with the demand at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Sunday.

Association President Arif Hossain Choton said, “Our demand is very little than the incentive packages announced by the government in the budget of 2021-2022 to protect the economy of the country from the adverse effects of the coronavirus pandemic.”

He urged the Prime Minister to save the book publishing industries, which is considered the backbone of the nation, from economic losses on a priority basis.

Choton also said the publishing sector, including book publishers and sellers, authors and editors, proof readers, and binding and laminating section, are badly affected due to the impact of the pandemic.

Association’s First Vice-president Kaiser-e Alam and Vice-president Shyamal Pal, among others, were present at the press conference.
