A Dhaka Court on Sunday sent Department of Passport and Immigration (DPI) deputy assistant director Motaleb Hossain and his wife Israt Jahan to jail in two cases filed on charges of amassing illegal wealth and concealing information of wealth.
Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Senior Special Judges’ Court of Dhaka passed the order rejecting their bail petitions in the cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).Earlier in the day, the couple surrendered before the special judge court and submitted petitions seeking their bail in the corruption cases.
On June 30, ACC Deputy Director Abu Bakr Siddique filed the cases against Motaleb Hossain and his wife Israt Jahan at the commission’s integrated district office in Dhaka.
According to the cases, Motaleb submitted his wealth statement to the commission showing his asset worth Tk 74.26 lakh during the period of March 11, 2004 to June 30, 2020.
But the ACC inquiry officer found that the DPI official concealed information of his wealth worth Tk 10.79 lakh in his wealth statement while he also amassed wealth worth Tk 41.23 lakh beyond known sources of his income.
Analyzing the wealth statement of Motaleb’s wife Israt Jahan, the ACC also found that she concealed information of her wealth worth Tk 99.98 lakh in wealth statement while she amassed illegal wealth worth Tk 3.8 crore during the period of 2009 to 2020.
