National Board of Revenue has decided to keep open customs houses and customs stations with limited manpower to facilitate export-import activities during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

The revenue board already sent a letter to all customs houses asking for necessary steps to keep the offices open during the Eid holidays.

The decision has been taken in order to keep the export-import activities for emergency goods and services, NBR said.

Eid-ul-Azha will be observed on Wednesday across the country while the three-day Eid holidays begin on Tuesday.

Special arrangements are being taken to run the export-import activities during the holidays, officials said.

Earlier, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) sent a letter to the NBR requesting it to keep open a customs house and a customs station during the Eid holidays. Officials concerned said the NBR came up with decision considering the request of the BGMEA.

The country’s most imports and exports are made through Chittagong port and Benapole customs houses.

As per the decision, Dhaka, Mongla, Kamalapur ICD and Pangaon customs will also be open during Eid holidays.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the collection of customs duty has already decreased. In the outgoing financial year, NBR collected Tk 770 billion as import duty which was Tk 170 billion less than the fiscal year’s target.
