Move to build hospital in CRB area protested

CHATTOGRAM: People from all walks of life staged a demonstration protesting the move to build a hospital in picturesque Chattogram Railway Building (CRB) area on Thursday.

They organised the demonstration under the banner of ‘Nagorik Samaj Chattogram’ at CRB Intersection.

Speaking at the rally, they demanded to shift site for the proposed hospital to any other places to save the heritage of CRB, considered as ‘Lung of Chattogram’.  They said that hospital is very important for the people, but the government should not establish it ruining the environment and natural beauty of the port city.

The protesters observed that the project would leave a bad impact on the environment due to felling of a number of century-old trees at the site.

Veteran Journalist Abul Momen, International War Crimes Tribunal Prosecutor Advocate Rana Das Gupta, Dr Mahfuzur Rahman, Professor Dr Idris Ali, Awami League (AL) Chattogram south district General Secretary Mofizur Rahman, Journalists Nazim Uddin Shyamol, Kamrul Hasan Badal, Cultural activists Saiful Alam Babu, Rashed Hasan, Miliy Chowdhury and Sharif Chouhan addressed the rally among others.

Bangladesh Railway (BR) signed an agreement with United Enterprise and Company Limited to build a 500-bed hospital, 100-seat medical college and a nursing institute in the CRB area.

The company will run the institution for the next 50 years and hand it over to the BR then.

Mentionable, CRB, the headquarters of BR East Zone is surrounded by hills, hillocks and valleys with a number of century-old trees. It is one of the tranquil and green places of the city.
