Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) will renovate and modernise the TRIGA nuclear research reactor of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC).

The BAEC has been operating the TRIGA Research Reactor since 1986 for manpower training, education, radioisotope production and various research and development activities in the area of nuclear science and power programme.

According to a press statement of the Korean Embassy in Dhaka, the KAERI has been awarded the tender for the modernisation of the 3 MW BAEC TRIGA Research Reactor (BTRR) and signed the contract with BAEC on Thursday.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, the contract-signing ceremony was held virtually between KAERI and BAEC, in presence of Chairman of BAEC Dr Md Sanowar Hossain, President of KAERI Dr PARK Won-seok and South Korean Ambassador in Dhaka Lee Jang-keun.

The upgradation of the project will be implemented at a cost of nearly USD 3.7 million, equivalent to Tk 15.4 crore, sources at the BAEC said.

The project became KAERI’s 6th major technology export related to research reactors, after its successful partnerships with Jordan, Greece, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Netherlands, reads the Korean embassy release.

It is also anticipated to be the stepping stone for further collaboration between KAERI and BAEC, including the prospective high-power multipurpose research reactor in Bangladesh.
