226 more die, 12,236 infected

Novel coronavirus or Covid-19 is spreading alarmingly across the country, including Dhaka, as 226 more people died and 12,236 contracted the deadly virus in the last 24 hours till Thursday morning.

There is still no sign of improvement in the country’s corona situation as fatalities and infections are on the rise despite the government’s strict measures to fight the highly contagious virus.                 

Of the new 226 deaths, 74 were reported in Dhaka division followed by 42 in Chattogram, 24 in Rajshahi, 52 in Khulna, 10 in Mymensingh, 13 in Rangpur, five in Sylhet and 10 in Barishal divisions, according to a report of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The new corona cases included 5,234 in Dhaka division, 498 in Mymensingh, 2,047 in Chattogram, 1,269 in Rajshahi, 511 in Rangpur, 1,639 in Khulna, 533 in Barishal and 538 in Sylhet division, the report said. 

The tally shows that highest single-day deaths and infections were recorded in Dhaka division in the last 24 hours till 8:00am.

The country has seen more than hundred single-day deaths from the virus for last 19 consecutive days while the daily detection of over 8,000 cases for 12 days in a row.

Earlier, highest 230 deaths were reported on July 11 and highest 13,768 cases on July 13 in the country.

A total of 2,775 people died and 1,59,516 infected with the virus across the country in 15 days of July which is the highest compared to the same period during the pandemic.

With the new 12,236 cases, the total number of people infected with the virus has risen to 10,71,774. The daily infection rate has declined to 27.23 percent during the time.

A total of 17,278 people have so far died of coronavirus in the country with the new single-day 226 deaths. The fatality rate has remained unchanged at 1.61 percent.

Around 8,395 corona patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of people recovered to 9,05,807 in the country till the day. The recovery rate has declined to 84.51 percent.

The DGHS report said infection rate has also risen as 15 percent of the samples have been diagnosed with corona till the date while 27.23 percent diagnosed with the virus in a day.

A total of 44,941 samples, out of 46,604 collected, were tested at 627 labs in the country during the period, the DGHS report said. A total of 77,44,420 samples have been tested so far across the country.

The first corona case was detected in the country on March 8 last year while the first death from the virus was recorded on March 18 the same year.

Hospital sources said corona situation continues to worsen in the country as a large number of people are not undergoing Covid-19 test even though they have symptoms.
