Workers of a readymade garment (RMG) factory took to the streets in Joydebpur of Gazipur on Wednesday, demanding their arrears and Eid bonus.

They blocked the busy Dhaka-Joydebpur highway, causing huge traffic jam there.

Workers and staff of Style Craft garments factory have been demanding their arrears for the last few months and staged protests in front of the factory several times.

According to the workers, the authorities of the factory on Tuesday were given an ultimatum to pay the arrears by evening, but they failed to do so.

Locals said the workers came to the factory at 8:00am and started protesting without joining work.

They blocked the highway around 10:00am, resulting in a gridlock of good-laden vehicles on both sides of the highway.

Additional police have been deployed in the factory area to avoid any unpleasant situation,

The factory has around 750 staff and 5,000 workers.

Chameli, a worker of the factory, said, “We don't need any new date or promise. We need our salaries.”

The workers of Style Craft had to stage a demonstration to get their salary and bonus ahead of last year’s Eid-ul-Fitr.

According to sources, the company has regularly delayed clearing the salaries of their workers.

The factory has yet to pay them salaries for three months of the current year and four months of the previous two years, they added.
