CEO arrested

Police arrested Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of e-commerce site Shahriar Khan from the capital’s Shanti Nagar area on charges of cheating thousands of customers.

A team of Cyber and Special Crime Division of Detective Branch under Dhaka Metropolitan Police held him on Sunday, said DMP Media and Public Relations Division on Tuesday.

Shariful Islam, deputy commissioner of the Cyber and Special Crime Division, told the Daily Sun that a victim named Ishtiaq Ahmed filed a case against Shahriar with Adabar Police Station recently.

According to the officer, Shahriar opened the e-commerce site in August last year. He allured people of selling computer, laptop, refrigerator, oven and some other electronic goods with 50 percent discount.

He made a commitment of delivering the product within 30 days from the order.

Being allured, at least 12,000 people, most of them were students or lower income group, ordered him for various products. They paid around Tk 70-80 millions, said the officer.

But, a few of his customers received the delivery and most of them were cheated by him, the officer added.
