A person who violated a teenage girl one year ago and then got married to her on condition that rape charges will be dropped was arrested on Monday, as he murdered his wife along with their nine-month-old daughter at Hatempur in Patharghata of Barguna on June 30.
After the murder, he buried the bodies of his wife Sumiya Akhter, 18, and the child at the back of his house in Hatempur. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police nabbed the alleged killer Mohammad Shahin Munshi, 21, from Chattogram, said Mukta Dhor, special superintendent of police of the CID, at the CID headquarters in the capital on Tuesday.
He said on July 14 last year, the father of Sumiya filed a rape case against Shahin.
Police arrested Shahin and he languished in jail for three months. Later, the family members of Shahin made a proposal of marriage and the family of Sumiya accepted it in order to get rid of the stoical stigma attached to rape.
Afterwards, Shahin got bail as per the request of the plaintiff and married her.
Although he married the girl, he could not accept her cordially, the police officer said, adding that their conjugal life was unhappy.
According to the officer, on the day of the incident on June 30, Sumiya with her daughter went to her father’s house and later on that day, she returned to her father-in-law’s.On July 2, the younger sister of the victim visited Sumiya’s father-in-law’s house, but did not find her there.
The family members of the house, however, said that Sumiya did not return to their residence.
Afterwards, the family members of the victims searched for the duo at every possible place, but did not find.
On July 3, they discovered the bodies of the two hidden beneath the soil at the back of the house. A murder case has been filed at Patharghata Police Station.
The officer quoted Shahin as saying that he suffocated her over a family feud and threw his daughter into a pond where the infant died. Later on, he buried the bodies.
