The government has approved five local tanneries to export wet blue leather in conditions for one year.

The approval came as a measure to create a demand for rawhide in the domestic markets during the peak season of Eid-ul-Azha.

The commerce ministry on Saturday gave the conditional approval after examining the application of the tanneries in this regard.

The companies will have to renew the permit after completion of the specific quota of wet blue export.

The government has allowed one crore square and 20 lakh feet wet blue each company for exporting for the first time.

As per the permission, the companies can export wet blue leather to China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Spain and Germany. The validity of the permission is up to June 30, 2022.

After completing the shipment, the companies will have to submit the necessary documents to the government offices concerned. The government can terminate the permission of wet blue export anytime, the commerce ministry said in a statement. Wet blue is a half crust leather to be finally tanned before using for making leather goods like shoes, bags or for final tan for exporting.

According to the commerce ministry letter, for wet blue export, the companies will have to follow some conditions including the rules of Export Policy 2018-21.

The permission will be applicable only for the fixed quantity of wet blue leather and fresh application is required after extending the export volume.

The exporters have to maintain good quality of wet blue leather.

After shipment, all the export documents should submit to the commerce ministry and the exporters can export the leather only to mentioned countries.
