Five members of a family, including two children, sustained burn injuries in an explosion while recharging a battery of an auto-rickshaw in the capital’s Kamrangirchar in the early hours of Friday.

Police sources said the incident took place on the ground-floor of a two-storey house on Kazi lean in Sylheti Bazar area at around 3:45am.

The survivors were rescued by locals and rushed to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.

The victims are Abdul Matin, 40, his wife Yasmin Aktar, 35, their two daughters Ayesha and Maysha, 10, and Yasmin’s nephew Abul Khayer Raihan, 25.

SM Ayub Hossain, resident physician at the institute, said Yasmin has 95 percent burns while Matin suffered 92 percent, their two daughters suffered 42 percent and Raihan suffered 18 percent burn injuries.

Md Bachchu Miah, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said the five people suffered burn injuries during recharging battery of an auto-rickshaw and they were taken to the emergency department of the burn institute early morning.
