The Anti-Corruption Com-mission (ACC) has imposed a ban on foreign travel by e-commerce company Evaly Chairman Shamima Nasrin and Managing Director (MD) Mohammad Rassel, also husband of Shamima, on charges of embezzling Tk 338.62 crore.

The anti-graft body took the initiative of banning their foreign travel on Thursday as the commission got information that the couple are trying to leave the country, said ACC public relations officer Muhammad Arif Sadiq.

He also said the ACC formed a two-member committee after receiving a letter from the commerce ministry for probing the allegations of irregularities against Evaly.

Earlier on July 4, the commerce ministry requested the ACC to take legal action against Evaly allegedly for embezzling about Tk 338.62 crore.

The letters were issued following an inspection report of the Bangladesh Bank that found alleged irregularities against the e-commerce company.

According to the letter that was sent to the ACC, Evaly’s total liability was Tk 407.18 crore, which they need to pay to consumers and merchants.

“After receiving Tk 213.94 crore in advance from customers and Tk 189.85 crore from merchants, the company was expected to have at least Tk 403.80 crore in current assets, but it had only Tk 65.17 crore,” the letter said.

It said Evaly will be able to deliver goods or return the money to only 16.14 percent of the customers with the company’s current wealth.

Bangladesh Bank sent the inspection report to the commerce ministry on June 16.

ACC Commissioner Dr Md Mozammel Haque Khan said the commission has directed investigators to look into whether any financial irregularities had taken place by the company.

He also said, “We had gotten another such allegation of irregularities against the e-commerce company before the commerce ministry’s letter was sent to us.”
