Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed on Thursday urged the countrymen to stay home during the ongoing strict lockdown aimed at containing the fast spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Stay home. Don’t get out except emergency needs. Wear face mask and maintain other health guidelines while coming out of residence in case of emergency,” he said.

The IGP made the statement while speaking as the chief guest at a relief distribution programme organised by Bangladesh Shop Owners’ Association at Shiddeshwari High School’s playground at Ramna in the capital.

“We (countrymen) will have to decide if we will much more prolong death procession or not? Let us work together to combat the coronavirus,” he said.

Speaking as a special guest, Md Jashim Uddin, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), said the shop owners’ association was helping 1,000 poor and helpless people.

Like them, the solvent people should carry out their responsibilities to help the poor during the pandemic, he said.

Speaking as a special guest, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said, “One will have to save one’s life. We will have to protect ourselves and our family members.  For this, we must wear masks and abide by other health rules.”

Mohammad Helal Uddin, president of Bangladesh Shop Owners’ Association, chaired the programme.
