Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday slammed BNP for ‘playing old records’ without standing by people during the coronavirus crisis.

“Bangladesh Nationalist Party is carrying out evil political activity. The party is playing old records without extending a helping hand to impoverished people,” he said.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said this while addressing a virtual press conference from his official residence on parliament premises in the capital.

The AL leader called upon everyone to work together to fight against Covid-19 pandemic to save the country.

He said that a political party should aim to protect lives of people, but the opposition BNP keeps telling falsehood.

“BNP leaders allege that their leaders and activists are being arrested and subjected to torture. But such allegations are fabricated and part of their series of falsehood,” he said.

During the crisis, all political parties should have made united efforts to address it, Quader said, adding that opposition parties also have responsibility to make people aware of Covid-19.

“In any crisis or disaster, everyone irrespective of his or her political affiliation has to be responsible,” he said.

The AL spokesperson said many developed countries are struggling economically but the economic growth of Bangladesh has become a wonder in the world under the visionary and skilled leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“The government and Awami League along with the public are working to save lives and livelihood,” he said.

Despite appreciation by world leaders over the efforts of incumbent government during the Covid-19 pandemic, some politicians and a faction of media are continuously castigating the government, Quader said.
