Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday said it is the right time to rethink Khaleda Zia’s return to jail.

“Now, it is high time to think about sending Khaleda Zia back to jail again according to the country’s law,” he said.

Hasan, also the joint general secretary of the Awami League, made the statement while exchanging views with the newly elected members of Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at his Secretariat office in the capital.

Referring to the comments of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders about Khaleda Zia’s health and treatment issues, the minister said, “It seems that it was wrong of us to keep Khaleda Zia out of jail by showing generosity despite not getting bail from the court.”

“Now it (decision) would be reconsidered again,” he said.

Bashing BNP leaders for their comments on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s speech, Hasan said BNP gets angry as the Prime Minister has told unpleasant truth in the parliament.

“The premier has told that Ziaur Rahman occupied the power through arms and did politics by forming the party (BNP) along with the leftovers that means the party was formed illegally. And even, the High Court has also told the same in its verdict,” he said.

“Most of the senior leaders of BNP, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain and Rizvi Ahmed, was involved with other parties and later joined the BNP to take leftovers of power. For this, they (BNP) feel anger after hearing the unpleasant truth,” he added.

Hasan said BNP should accept the truth as none can survive along with lies for long.

“I would like to urge Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to teach the party (BNP) leaders decency,” he added.

Replying to a comment of Mirza Fakhrul about the resignations of two BNP leaders, the minister said it seems that the fleeing has begun from the party.
