CHATTOGRAM: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested two drug peddlers with hemp and ‘Eskuf’ syrup in Sitakunda Upazila in the early hours of Saturday.

The arrestees were identified as truck driver Md Idris, 30, and his helper Md Morshed, 21, of Khagrachhari district.

Rab-7 Assistant Director (AD-Media) Md Nurul Absar said on receiving information, they set up a checkpoint in Jora Amtal area on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway under the upazila around 2:00 am.

As they signalled to stop a truck, the driver and helper tried to flee leaving the vehicle near the checkpoint, he said.

Rab men, however, caught them after a chase.

Later, a total of 19.70 kilograms of hemp and 93 bottles of Eskuf syrup were recovered from two sacks kept inside the truck, said the AD.

During preliminary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they had long been selling the drug in different parts of the country after collecting them from bordering areas of Cumilla district, he said.

The arrestees and the seized drugs were handed over to Sitakunda Police Station, Absar added.
