Seven killed in road crashes in Tangail, Naogaon

At least seven people were killed and eight others injured in separate road accidents in Tangail and Naogaon districts on Saturday.

In Tangail, a head-on collision between a pickup and an ambulance left five people dead and five others injured in Kalihati upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Farida, 45, a cancer patient from Chattogram, her daughter Maria, 9, Farida’s elder sister Ferdousi Begum, ambulance driver Sajjad, 30, and his assistant Mohammad Jewel.

The injured are Harez Ali, 45, Badsha, 20, Shajahan, 40, Maruf, 25 and Mahi, 7.

Quoting family members of the deceased, police said the ambulance was carrying Farida to Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College and Hospital at Enayetpur in Sirajganj for chemotherapy.

When the ambulance reached the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge at Hatia, a fish-laden pickup collided head-on with it at about 7:30am, leaving the three dead on the spot, police said.

Seven injured were rushed to Tangail General Hospital where two of them succumbed to their injuries, police added.

Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shafiqul Islam said that two of the vehicles got damaged seriously. The wrecks of the vehicles were removed from the highway.

He said they would take legal steps in this regard.

In Naogaon, two mango traders were killed and three others injured when two trucks collided head-on in Satihat area under Manda upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Khalil Pramanik, 40, son of late Niyat Ali, hailing from Sultanpur village at Gargari union in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi and Shariful, 35, from Kushtia.

The cement-laden truck collided head-on with another mango-laden truck in the area, leaving the duo dead on the spot and three others injured, said Shahinur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Manda Police Station.

The injured were taken to a hospital, he said.
