Eight prison guards at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) were withdrawn from duties for allegedly allowing Destiny-2000 Limited’s Managing Director Rafiqul Amin to hold online meetings from the prison cell of the hospital.

The Department of Prisons took the decision on Thursday night after the matter of Rafiqul Amin’s meetings with his subordinate officers of the company by using mobile phone from the prison cell received media attention.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Prisons Colonel Md Abrar Hossain said, “We have come to know from the media on Thursday that Rafiqul Amin participated in a Zoom meeting with his company members.”

Abrar said a three-member committee led by Deputy Inspector General of Prisons for Dhaka Division Tawhidul Islam has been formed and they were asked to submit their report by seven working days.”

The AIG said that new prison guards had replaced the accused.

He said, “No prisoner is allowed to talk to any outsider without any permission.  The committee will look into the matter of how he attended the online meeting collecting mobile phone.”

The Department of Prisons will take the next course of departmental action against the eight wardens, following the recommendations from the committee, said Abrar.
