8 get bullet wounds in Noakhali clash

NOAKHALI: At least 20 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League at Companiganj upazila in the district on Thursday night over previous enmity and establishing supremacy in the area.

Eight of them—UP member Helal Uddin, 35, Firoz, 26, Saddam Hossain, 40, Elias, 24, Yousuf, 30, Rubel, 29, Sabuj, 36, and Md Bahar, 30-- received bullet injuries.

The injured were admitted to Companiganj Upazila Health Complex and Noakhali Sadar General Hospital.

The clash took place between supporters of Basurhat municipality mayor Abdul Quader Mirza, younger brother of Road Transport and Bridges Minister and AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, and the upazila’s former chairman and the upazila AL organizing secretary Mizanur Rahman Badal at ward No. 4 of Charhazari union at about 10:00pm.

During the clash, chases and anti-chases, firing and cocktails explosion occurred.

Being informed, police went there and brought the situation under control.

Regarding the matter, OC Md Saif Uddin Anwar said additional police were deployed in the area.

A police hunt is on to detain those involved in the incident, he added.
