Tamim, Mushfiq’s injuries worry Tigers

Bangladesh began their preparation for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday with injury clouds still hovering over two senior cricketers - Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim.

The Tigers, who received a big boost after Shakib al Hasan joining them in Harare, will have some sleepless nights ahead of the one-off Test starts on July 7 as they are still unsure about the participation of Tamim and Mushfiqur who have been suffering from knee and finger injury respectively.

Tamim, Mushfiqur and Taskin Ahmed couldn’t take part in the last round matches of Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division T20 League for their respective injuries.

Although Taskin recovered sufficiently enough, the injuries of Tamim and Mushfiq are likely to take more time to heal which may lead them not featuring in the one-off Test.

BCB Chief Physician Debashish Chowdhury said that Tamim’s improvement ratio is quite slow while Mushfiq also may need more time to get completely fit.

“We suggested to him (Tamim) that he took rest for 15 days and although 13 days passed he didn’t have improvements as we expected,” said Debashish.

“We suggested that he extends his rest period but it doesn’t necessarily mean that he will be on bed rest.

“He will go to the field for practice and if he feels okay then no issue. But if he doesn’t then he will continue to take rest up to the Test series and he can play the Test only if he feels he is alright,” he added.

It was learnt that Tamim had already consulted with Australian David Young and he suggested him a long rest but the southpaw is trying his best to make him available for the Test and ODI series.

BCB already included Mahmudullah in the Test squad as a backup for the senior cricketers.

Bangladesh chief selector Minhajul Abedin is yet to press the panic button as he said that they are waiting to see whether these cricketers are available for the two-day practice game or not.

“We can have a clear picture of their injury status on July 3 and we are waiting to see whether they can make them available for the practice game because until then everything will just be speculation,” he said.

Meanwhile, BCB replaced physiotherapist Julian Calefato with Bayezidul Islam for the Zimbabwe series as he couldn’t join the squad in Zimbabwe due to passport issues.
