GAIBANDHA: Speakers at a function here unanimously underscored the need for changing the socio-economic condition of the transgender people through involving them in Income Generating Activities (IGA).
In this context, the training on different trades including livestock rearing can help the transgender people earn economic profit to change their living standard and be self-dependent as well, they said.They made the comments while addressing an inaugural session of 12-day training for the transgender people at the hall room of district Social Services office of the town here on Thursday.
Department of Social Services (DSS) has arranged the training under the programme of ‘Living Standard Improvement of Transgender Community’.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin addressed the function as the chief guest while acting deputy director of DSS Md. Kamrul Islam Sarker presided over the ceremony.
Social services officer (registration) Mizanur Rahman Mollick, Hizra Gurumata Mou Khatun addressed the inaugural session, among others.
The speakers said the members of the community are always subjected to negligence and repression in every sphere of life including family and society.
An emphasis should be given for ensuring fundamental rights especially health, social and legal of the transgender people for uplifting their living and livelihood condition.DC Abdul Matin said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very much positive towards solving the problems of the transgender community and for this, the training programme has been arranged for them.
The society, as a whole, should come forward with a positive attitude towards the transgender people for their co-existence in society with decent livelihoods, the DC added.
The DC also urged the transgender people to complete the training programme successfully and apply the acquired knowledge in practical life in a bid to live in the society with dignity avoiding the begging and other malpractices.
A total of 30 transgender people of the district are taking part in the training.
